ChildWatch.ie has evolved from a need for digital based security and privacy for children, and a desire for adults to better understand and appreciate the difficulties involved in protecting children whilst retaining freedom to interact on the internet.
We began this journey many years ago and in recent years have found a need to support businesses that found themselves with difficulties related mostly to their users meddling in imagery involving children and pornography. Following this we had a discussion with Fergus Finlay of Barnardos that lead to the development of a report highlighting the issues of child protection in the electronic age.
We have worked with media such as RTE Television, TV3, and radio stations such are Country Mix, regional stations and of course the print media.
We have also spoken to many thousands of students, teachers and parents through our pretty unique Teen Safe presentations program.
We were instrumental in highlighting brand abuse where major companies were finding their logos and advertisements on internet sites involved in child pornography and this resulted in one well known major internet site being taken off line; a number of free web hosting sites being pressured to clean up their online content; one of the largest commercial adult porn organisations being investigated for being a danger to its consumers through advertising on child porn sites; tracking of criminals infiltrating sites registered in the UK and placing child pornography in proximity to unsuspecting high profile commercial organisations.
